Use the same unit system for length, width, and depth.

A common decorative gravel depth is around 2–3 inches; follow project and product guidance.
Actual density varies by stone and moisture.
Before you order: Gravel settles and varies by grading, compaction, and moisture. Treat this as a volume estimate, confirm the recommended depth for your project, and check bag coverage or bulk-load minimums with your supplier.

How the gravel estimate works

For a rectangular project, area is length × width. For a circle, area is π × radius². Volume is area multiplied by the entered depth. The optional allowance is added to the calculated volume; the weight estimate is only a rough guide when you select a density.

Frequently asked questions

How deep should gravel be?

It depends on the use, stone size, base preparation, and whether the surface will carry foot or vehicle traffic. Follow a suitable project specification and the supplier's guidance.

How many cubic yards do I need?

Calculate the area, multiply it by the depth converted into the same unit, then convert the resulting volume. This calculator does those conversions for you.

Should I add extra gravel?

An allowance can help account for uneven ground, settling, or small measurement differences. The appropriate amount depends on the site and material, so adjust it to your project.
