Plan your watering

Measure the area you want to water, then choose the depth for this session. The result is a volume estimate, not a fixed schedule.

Enter the depth you intend to apply per session.

This is a planning estimate. Check soil moisture and local watering guidance before irrigating; rainfall, plant type, temperature, soil and system output affect real needs.

How to use the watering estimate

01 · Measure the area

Enter the length and width in feet. For an irregular shape, divide it into rectangles and calculate each section separately.

02 · Choose a depth

Enter your intended watering depth in inches. This calculator converts that depth and area into a volume estimate.

03 · Adjust for delivery

Select an efficiency allowance if some water may be lost to drift, runoff or uneven coverage. Treat this as an estimate, not a measurement.

Watering calculator FAQs

How much water is one inch over a square foot?

One inch of water over one square foot equals approximately 0.623 US gallons, or 2.36 litres, before any allowance for delivery efficiency.

How often should I water my lawn?

There is no universal schedule. Weather, rainfall, grass type, soil, shade, season and local restrictions all matter. Check soil moisture and follow local water-use guidance rather than relying on a fixed number of sessions.

Does this tell me how long to run my sprinkler?

Not directly. To estimate runtime, you also need the measured output of your sprinkler or irrigation system. If you know how many gallons it delivers per minute, divide the required gallons by that flow rate.

Can I use this for garden beds?

Yes. Enter the garden bed dimensions and the watering depth you intend to apply. Different plants and soils may need different amounts, so use the result as a volume estimate and check soil moisture.

Leaf & Lodge note: This calculator estimates water volume from area and depth. It does not diagnose plant stress or replace local drought restrictions, irrigation guidance, or observation of soil moisture.
