How much grass seed do you need?

Enter your area and the application rate shown on your seed label. This calculator converts units and adds an optional extra allowance.

Use the rate recommended for your specific project.

For multiple sections, add their areas together.

Enter the number on the label per 1,000 sq ft or per 100 m², depending on units below.

Optional buffer for edges, spills, and uneven coverage.

Calculation: area ÷ rate-basis area × seed rate, then add the selected allowance. Conversions use 1 m² ≈ 10.7639 sq ft and 1 kg ≈ 2.20462 lb. Always follow the seed product label for the recommended rate and preparation instructions.

Tip: Don’t use one universal seed rate for every grass type. Grass species, climate, seed mix, soil preparation, and application method can change the recommended amount. The label on your chosen product is the best starting point.

Frequently asked questions

How much seed do I need for a new lawn?

It depends on the grass species and product mix. Enter the new-lawn rate printed on your seed label, then calculate using your measured area.

Is overseeding different from starting a new lawn?

Yes. Overseeding an established lawn commonly uses a different application rate from seeding bare soil. Select the appropriate project type and use the matching rate from your product label.

Should I buy extra grass seed?

A small buffer may help with edges, small spills, or uneven areas, but it is optional. Avoid applying more than the product recommends.

Can I calculate in metric units?

Yes. Select square metres and choose the rate basis that matches your seed label. Enter the seed rate in the weight unit selected.
