Your planting plan

How many plants will fit?

Counts are estimates for mature plants. Always check the spacing on your seed packet or plant label.

Planting layout

Rows run along the bed length, with room between rows.

How to use your planting estimate

Measure the inside growing area of your bed, choose the crop, then compare layouts. Traditional rows generally leave more walking and airflow room; a square grid can fit more compact crops into the same area.

  • Use the bed’s inside dimensions, not the outside timber dimensions.
  • Spacing differs by variety, growing method and whether plants are trellised.
  • Mixed-crop layouts and irregular beds need a separate plan; this estimate covers one crop at a time.
  • Plant counts are not seed counts. Use the Seed Starting Calculator to account for germination and transplant losses.
