Lawn top dressing works best at ¼–½″ — deeper than that risks smothering the grass.

How this calculator works & assumptions
  • Compost is sized by volume: area × depth. Inches become feet by dividing by 12; centimeters divide by 2.54 first.
  • Sides are converted to feet (inches ÷ 12, meters × 3.28084) before multiplying; 1 m² ≈ 10.76 ft².
  • Conversions: 1 yd³ = 27 ft³ · 1 ft³ ≈ 7.48 US gallons.
  • Bag counts are rounded up to the next whole bag, and bag sizes are the nominal volumes printed on the label.
  • Coverage per bag = bag size ÷ depth — handy for checking how far a pallet will stretch.
  • Compost settles a little after rain and watering; for delivered loads, round up rather than down.
  • No weight or density math — moisture content shifts compost weight a lot, so suppliers quote volume.
